Bicycle cover? What should you choose?

CoverHero Guiden

If you don't have a shed, a garage, a basement or the ability to bring your bike inside, it's exposed to wind, rain, snow and sun – and it wears out more than most people expect. Moisture causes rust, UV light causes colors to fade, and electronics on electric bikes get damaged over time. A bike cover or bike garage is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your bike without having to invest in a permanent cover.

If you want to read more about how a bike cover protects your bike from wind, weather and damage all year round, you can read our guide on effective protection of your bike with the right bike cover.

An added bonus: A cover hides the bike and makes it less attractive to thieves – especially when combined with an alarm lock. It's a perfect solution for regular bikes, e-bikes and cargo bikes .

A bike cover doesn't have to be expensive. There are many good bike garages and covers for little money. The biggest challenge is actually choosing the right one – and here you will find everything you need to know.

Avoid the cheapest models

Cheap covers can be tempting, but they rarely last. They are often made of thin material that cannot withstand either UV rays or prolonged rain. They work fine for a few months, but quickly lose their shape, wear thin and leak water.

What material is the bike cover made of?

The material is crucial for durability, weather protection and price. Most bike covers are made of polyester of varying thickness – measured in denier (D) . The higher the D number, the more robust and weatherproof it is.

  • 210D polyester: Lightweight, flexible and good for everyday use.
  • 300–420D polyester: More durable and better against rain and UV.
  • 600D polyester: Strong, extremely durable and more tightly woven.

Remember:

  • No textile is 100% waterproof without a coating – but thicker material keeps water out longer.
  • Thicker covers are heavier and slightly less flexible.
  • Premium covers often use combinations of thicknesses for both strength and flexibility.

Keep an eye on the seams

The seams are often the weakest point. Choose a bike cover with:

  • double stitching
  • taped or heat-sealed seams

These reduce the risk of leaks and increase resistance to wear and tear.

Which size should you choose?

Bike covers come in several sizes – typically S, M, L, XL and covers for 1–3 bikes. Even if you only have one bike, a larger cover may be smarter.

If you are unsure about which size to choose, you can find help in our guide: Bicycle cover - find the right size.

Advantages of a larger cover:

  • easier to get over the bike
  • goes all the way to the ground and covers better
  • space for a basket, child seat or bed
  • possibility to cover two bicycles if needed

Keyholes

Choose a bike cover with lock holes so you can lock your bike through the cover. Holes at the wheels or in the side make it easy to attach a chain lock while still protecting your bike.

Ventilation

Ventilation is important! Condensation can build up moisture under the cover and cause rust over time. Covers with ventilation flaps or grilles allow air circulation, reducing moisture and keeping the bike drier.

Elastic or cords

A good bottom closure keeps the cover tight to the bike and reduces the risk of wind getting in. Cheap covers often have weak elastics, while premium covers have adjustable cords that can be tightened for a better fit.

To ensure optimal fit and protection, you can follow our step-by-step guide to how to mount your bike garage correctly.

Storm straps

Straps and buckles under the bike prevent the cover from blowing off – even in strong winds. It’s a simple but important feature, especially if the bike is left outdoors.

Eyes

Eyelets allow you to further secure the cover – either with a car elastic, cord or carabiner. This helps against both stormy weather and theft.

The most important thing is: Consider how you use the bike, where it is parked, and choose a cover that matches your needs.
