Bicycle Cover? Which One Should You Choose?

CoverHero Guiden

If you do not have a shed, garage, basement storage room or the option to bring your bike indoors, it is exposed to wind, rain, snow and sun – and this causes more wear than most people expect. Moisture causes rust, UV light fades colours, and electronics on e-bikes can be damaged over time. A bicycle cover or bicycle garage is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your bike without investing in permanent shelter.

If you would like to learn more about how a bicycle cover protects your bike from wind, weather and damage all year round, read our guide to effective protection for your bike with the right bicycle cover.

An added bonus: A cover conceals the bike and makes it less attractive to thieves – especially when combined with an alarm lock. It is a perfect solution for regular bikes, e-bikes and cargo bikes.

A bicycle cover does not have to be expensive. There are many good bicycle garages and covers available at a low price. The biggest challenge is actually choosing the right one – and here is everything you need to know.

Avoid the cheapest models

Cheap covers can be tempting, but they rarely last. They are often made from thin material that cannot withstand either UV rays or prolonged rain. They work well for a few months, but quickly lose their shape, wear thin and leak water.

What material is the bicycle cover made from?

The material is crucial for durability, weather protection and price. Most bicycle covers are made from polyester in different thicknesses – measured in denier (D). The higher the D rating, the more robust and weather-resistant it is.

  • 210D polyester: Lightweight, flexible and suitable for everyday use.
  • 300–420D polyester: More durable and better against rain and UV.
  • 600D polyester: Heavy-duty, extremely hard-wearing and more tightly woven.

Remember:

  • No textile is 100% waterproof without a coating – but thicker material keeps water out for longer.
  • Thicker covers are heavier and slightly less flexible.
  • Premium covers often use combinations of thicknesses for both strength and flexibility.

Pay attention to the seams

The seams are often the weakest point. Choose bicycle covers with:

  • double stitching
  • taped or heat-sealed seams

These reduce the risk of leaks and increase resistance to wear and tearing.

What size should you choose?

Bicycle covers are available in several sizes – typically S, M, L, XL and covers for 1–3 bikes. Even if you only have one bike, a larger cover can be the smarter choice.

If you are unsure which size to choose, you can find help in our guide: Bicycle cover – find the right size.

Benefits of a larger cover:

  • easier to put over the bike
  • reaches all the way to the ground and provides better coverage
  • room for a basket, child seat or cargo box
  • the option to cover two bikes when needed

See our range of:

  • Bicycle garages for regular bikes
  • Covers for 2-wheel cargo bikes
  • Covers for 3-wheel cargo bikes
  • bicycle covers for outdoor storage.
  • Lock holes

Choose a bicycle cover with lock holes so you can secure the bike through the cover. Holes by the wheels or on the side make it easy to attach a chain lock while the bike remains protected.

    Ventilation

Ventilation is important! Condensation can build up moisture beneath the cover and cause rust over time. Covers with ventilation flaps or mesh provide air circulation, reduce moisture and keep the bike drier.

Also read our guide to maintenance and care.

    Elastic or drawstrings

A good bottom finish keeps the cover close to the bike and reduces the risk of the wind catching it. Cheap covers often have weak elastic, while premium covers have adjustable drawstrings that can be tightened for a better fit.

To ensure the best fit and protection, follow our step-by-step guide on how to fit your bicycle garage correctly.

    Storm straps

Straps and buckles beneath the bike prevent the cover from blowing off – even in strong winds. It is a simple but important feature, especially if the bike is stored outdoors in an exposed location.

    Eyelets

Eyelets make it possible to secure the cover further – with a bungee cord, rope or carabiner. This helps against both stormy weather and theft.

The most important thing is: Consider how you use your bike, where it is parked, and choose a cover that matches your specific needs.
