Theft from bicycle baskets is increasing in Copenhagen – what you need to know

A light shove in traffic. A brief moment of distraction. And suddenly the bag, wallet or laptop is gone from the bike basket. That's what several cyclists in Copenhagen have experienced recently, and both the police and the insurance industry confirm the pattern: theft from bike baskets is on the rise.

What's happening

Several of the largest insurance companies report a marked increase in claims where valuables are stolen directly from bike baskets – often while the cyclist is still riding. The thief cycles or runs past, grabs the bag or item from the basket, and is gone before the victim can react. It typically happens during rush hour, on busy bike lanes, where a brief bump or touch is easily mistaken for ordinary crowding.

The capital area is particularly affected, but reports are also coming in from other parts of the country.

Why the bike basket is an easy target

An open bike basket is, by nature, visible to anyone cycling or walking past. Unlike a bag tucked under a jacket or inside a closed backpack, the contents of the basket sit out in the open – which is exactly what makes it attractive to opportunistic thieves on the move.

This applies even more to cargo bikes, where the open cargo area often holds children's belongings, groceries and personal items, all visible to anyone passing by.

How to reduce the risk

• Keep valuables out of sight. Put your wallet, phone and laptop in a closed bag at the bottom of the basket or cargo area – not loose on top.
• Choose a basket or bag with a zip or closure, so the contents aren't visible and grabbable in one motion.
• Stay extra alert in heavy traffic, for example at intersections and busy bike lanes, where a thief can easily disappear into the crowd.
• Cover the bike or cargo bike when it's parked – whether for a short stop or overnight. A bike basket cover hides the contents from passers-by and makes it far less obvious what might be sitting in the basket or cargo area.
• Check your home contents insurance. Theft from a bike basket is generally covered on the same terms as ordinary theft of belongings, but excess and age-based deductions may apply.

It's about making the bike less appealing

The basic principle is the same whether it concerns the bike itself or the contents of the basket: the less there is to see, the less appealing it is to a thief. A bike basket cover isn't a lock and doesn't replace sensibly storing your valuables – but it removes the first and easiest incentive: the ability to see what's worth taking while the bike is parked.
