Theft from bike baskets is rising in Copenhagen – what you need to know

A small shove in traffic. A brief moment of inattention. And suddenly, your bag, wallet or laptop is gone from your bike basket. More Copenhagen cyclists have had this experience recently, and both the police and insurance industry confirm the trend: theft from bike baskets is rising in the capital.
What is happening
Several of Denmark's largest insurance companies report a significant increase in claims involving valuables stolen directly from bike baskets – often while the cyclist is still on the bike. The thief cycles or runs past, grabs the bag or item from the basket, and is gone before the victim has time to react. It typically happens during rush hour, on busy cycle paths where a quick shove or touch can easily be mistaken for ordinary crowding.
The Copenhagen area has been particularly affected, but reports are also coming in from other parts of the country.
Why the bike basket is an easy target
An open bike basket is, by its nature, visible to everyone cycling or walking past. Unlike a bag under your jacket or in a closed backpack, the contents of a basket are on display – and that is exactly what makes it attractive to opportunistic thieves.
This applies even more to cargo bikes, where the open cargo area often contains children's belongings, shopping and personal items that are visible to anyone passing by.
How to minimise the risk
- Keep valuables out of sight. Put your wallet, phone and laptop in a closed bag at the bottom of the basket or cargo area – not loose on top.
- Choose a basket or bag with a zip or closure so the contents are not visible and accessible in one quick grab.
- Be extra alert in heavy traffic, for example at junctions and on cycle paths with lots of cyclists, where a thief can easily disappear into the crowd.
- Cover your bike or cargo bike when it is parked – whether for a short stop or overnight. A bike basket cover hides the contents from passers-by and makes it far less obvious what may be in the basket or cargo area.
- Check your home contents insurance. Theft from a bike basket is generally covered under the same terms as ordinary theft of household contents, but there may be an excess and age-related depreciation to consider.
It is about making your bike less tempting
The basic point is the same, whether it concerns the bike itself or the contents of the basket: the less there is to see, the less attractive it is to a thief. A bike basket cover is not a lock and does not replace sensible placement of valuables – but it removes the first and easiest incentive: the opportunity to see what is worth taking while the bike is parked.
