How to best protect your electric bike – all year round

An electric bike is a valuable investment, so it makes sense to take extra care of it. Whether you use your electric bike daily or only occasionally, taking the right precautions can save you both money and hassle.

Here you will find 7 effective tips on how to best protect your electric bike against weather, wear and tear and theft.

1. Use a specially designed electric bike cover

Electric bikes have electrical components that do not tolerate moisture and cold as well as traditional bikes. An electric bike cover is therefore important – especially if the bike is outside.

✔️ Protects against rain and snow

✔️ Prevents UV damage to display and plastic parts

✔️ Reduces the risk of surface rust

2. Store the battery properly

The most expensive component on an electric bike is the battery. Therefore, you should:

  • Take the battery indoors if the bike is outside.
  • Store it at 10–20°C – never below freezing.
  • Charge the battery to approximately 50–60% during extended storage
  • Avoid letting it run completely flat

👉 A battery that is stored incorrectly can lose capacity and, in the worst case, become defective.

3. Dry the bike after rain and snow

After a wet bike ride you should:

  • Dry the frame, display and battery area with a soft cloth.
  • Check plugs and charging sockets for moisture
  • Lubricate the chain and moving parts to prevent rusting.

This extends the life of both the bike and the battery.

4. Use a good bike lock – preferably two

Electric bikes are a target for theft. That's why we recommend:

  • An approved fixed ring lock
  • An additional cable lock or folding lock around the frame and fixed object
  • Possibly a GPS tracker

5. Avoid overcharging and cheap chargers

Always use the original charger and follow these tips:

  • Do not leave the battery plugged in overnight.
  • Charge in a dry, fireproof place
  • Do not use non-original chargers – they can damage the battery.

6. Service and maintenance

An electric bike has both mechanical and electrical parts that require maintenance:

  • Have your brake pads serviced at least once a year - preferably every 1500 km due to wear on your brake pads.
  • Check brakes, chain and tires often
  • Clean and lubricate the chain regularly – preferably with special chain oil for electric bicycles.

7. Use a bike garage or storage solution

The best protection is covered storage:

  • A bike garage or wall mount protects the bike
  • It protects against weather, theft and tipping.
  • Perfect for both the home and the summer house
