How to Store Your Bike Properly in Winter

When the winter cold sets in, it is important to consider how best to protect your bike from the elements. Without proper storage, your bike can be damaged by moisture, frost and dirt – which can mean costly repairs in spring.

Here is our 5-step guide to optimal winter storage for your bike.

1. Clean your bike thoroughly

Before putting your bike away, it should be cleaned thoroughly:

• Remove dirt, road salt and oil
• Use a mild bike cleaner and a soft brush
• Dry the bike completely – especially around the chain, gears and brakes

A clean bike does not rust nearly as easily as a dirty one.

2. Lubricate the chain and moving parts

After cleaning, you should lubricate:

• The chain with a good winter oil
• Gears, cables and moving parts with a suitable lubricant

This minimises the risk of rust and frozen parts.

3. Use a bike cover

A bike cover is essential if your bike is stored outdoors – or in an unheated shed. It protects against:

• Rain and snow
• UV rays, which break down plastic and paintwork
• Dirt and moisture, which can lead to rust

4. Store your bike somewhere dry and safe

The best winter storage is:

• Indoors (for example, in a basement, garage or shed)
• On a bike stand or hanging rack to protect the tyres
• Without pressure on the suspension or wheels

5. Inflate the tyres and check the pressure regularly

When your bike is left unused for a long time, the tyres can lose air. Inflate them to the correct pressure before storage – and check them regularly. Low tyre pressure can cause flat spots or misshapen tyres that need replacing.

• Store it at room temperature and at around 60% charge
• Avoid letting it fully discharge during winter
