When the winter cold sets in, it's important to think about how to best protect your bike from the elements. Without proper storage, your bike can be damaged by moisture, frost and dirt – and that could mean expensive repairs in the spring.
Here you will find our 5-step guide to optimal winter storage of your bicycle.
1. Clean the bike thoroughly
Before you put the bike away, it should be washed thoroughly:
Remove dirt, road salt and oil
Use a mild bike cleaner and a soft brush
Dry the bike completely – especially around the chain, gears and brakes
A clean bike doesn't rust nearly as easily as a dirty one.
2. Lubricate chain and moving parts
After cleaning, you should lubricate:
The chain with a good winter oil
Gears, cables and moving parts with appropriate lubrication
This minimizes the risk of rust and frozen parts.
3. Use a bike cover
A bike cover is indispensable if the bike is outside – or in an unheated shed. It protects against:
If you don't have space inside, a cover + raised bike rack is a good solution.
5. Pump up the tires and check the pressure regularly
When your bike is not in use for a long time, your tires can lose air. Inflate them to the correct pressure before storing them – and check them regularly. Low tire pressure can cause flat or warped tires that need to be replaced.
Do you have an electric bike? So:
Take the battery indoors
Store it at room temperature and around 60% charged.
Avoid letting it completely discharge during the winter
